Oil Spill Recovery Volunteer Information

From Mark LaSalle --
Pascagoula River Audubon Center

The best thing that citizens can do to prepare for the incumbent oil spill disaster is to stay calm and hope that the slick does not impact the coast line as harshly as predicted.

At this point, things don’t look well for the marine life and breeding bird populations along the Louisiana and Mississippi Coast because it is breeding season for many shore and sea birds.

Soccer Field Dedication Honors Coach Feidt

PASCAGOULA – City officials and the Singing River Soccer Club will officially dedicate one of the fields at the Pascagoula Soccer Complex in memory of William E. Feidt during a dedication ceremony at noon Saturday, April 3.

“Coach Feidt’s commitment to soccer and the betterment of the sport influenced the lives of many within our community,” said Darcie Crew, directer of Pascagoula Parks and Recreation. “The dedication of the field at the soccer complex is a small way for us to honor all he achieved and his positive influence still being felt by our youth today.”

Feidt spent over 30 years coaching soccer at all levels within Pascagoula from 1979 to 2009. During this time he coached “The Flame” (U-19 team) for 19 years, served as Pascagoula High School’s head coach for two years, and assistant head coach and junior varsity coach for 10 years.

Under Feidt’s leadership, “The Flame” won 11 Southern District championships, advanced to the state playoffs 18 times and to the finals five times. He also led the Pascagoula “Panthers” to the playoffs both years he served as head coach.

While off the field Coach Feidt’s passion for the sport lead him to co-found the Singing River Soccer Club in 1979, where he served two terms as president, followed by club registrar and secretary. Feidt also served as registrar at the state level for the Mississippi Youth Soccer Association.

It is through such exemplary achievements that Coach Feidt was selected in 2008 as a national winner of the Liberty Mutual 2008 Responsible Coaching Award for the State of Mississippi. In 2009, he was honored by the Singing River Soccer Club with a Lifetime Achievement Award and presented with the “Champion of Our Hearts Trophy” from former players.

Following the official dedication ceremony the annual Alumni Soccer Game will begin at 1 p.m. at the Pascagoula Soccer Complex.

For more information about the dedication ceremony, please contact Darcie Crew, Pascagoula Parks & Recreation director, at (228) 218-6032, or send an email to darcies@cityofpascagoula.com.
